Bigger Business, Broken Trust: Cathy Engelbert’s WNBA Legacy After seven years leading the WNBA, Cathy Engelbert, the first person to hold the title of commissioner, announced on Friday, September 4, that she would retire at the end of the year.
In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Engelbert said she originally intended to remain in the position for only 3 1/2 years. Instead, her tenure stretched twice that long and encompassed one of the transformative and contentious periods in league history.
